Shift Happens. Did you know?

I watched this on YouTube today. Those facts in this presentation really open my eyes. At least for once in your lifetime, you will know how fast technology is creeping into our daily lives. From sms to blog, from bytes to yottabytes, from education to information, we have to keep ourselves au courant (abreast) with all these development.

What are Malaysians doing? Still lingering in the current state? While our leaders are still fighting for who to stay in the Cabinet who to be punished because of their different stance in politics, the global community is moving very fast forward. China and India has surpassed the States in terms of workforce and geniuses. Even a small country like Luxembourg has a higher broadband penetration than the States. How about our lovely Malaysia?

As a student, a-soon-to be engineer or academician, I am alarmed at how unprepared our generation to exist in the global community. I couldn’t believe our youngsters are still being spoon-fed, the thing I worried most is most of them if not all enjoy the spoon-feeding teaching process. Had I not grown up to be a little bit wiser (attending university), I may still very much delight myself with such kind of teaching process. We have to stop such mediocre mentality!!

Knowledge!

Did you know? The amount of new technical information is doubling every 2 years. That means for a student starting a four-year technical or college degree, half of what they learn in their first year of study will be outdated by their third year of study. It’s predicted to double every 72 hours by 2010.

According to Alan November, “We need to emphasized the necessity of students learning with others around the world and stress that 3 skills are needed to teach our children.” First, we need to teach our students to deal with massive amounts of information. Secondly, we need to teach our students global communication, starting with kindergarten. Last but not least, we need to teach our students to be self-directed and understand how to organize more and more of their own learning.

Wait a minute…

I have a few questions. How do we first deal with the massive amounts of information? How do we begin communicating globally? How do we self direct ourselves and be more organized in our own learning. That’s something worth contemplating. If I have the time, I will consider doing more study and look for more information about these and perhaps that’ll be a topic for my future post.

Believe it or not, many upper secondary school students here know very little about computers!!! Some may have internet access…to play games and that’s about it.

Most of them have to go for tuition left, right and centre in their pursuit for a string of As…and sad to say, never have I seen students so ignorant!!! They don’t seem knowledgeable about anything at all despite having sailed through the public exams with flying colours.

I asked a group of Form 4s the names of the ethnic tribes in West Malaysia…and they could not tell me. I said they’re classified under one general name…;no answer!!! Then, to give them a clue, I said, “Orang…” and they replied, “…Utan!!! Gosh! They’re so pathetic!!! What is to become of them in the future, I wonder???

So there’s no need to talk about keeping up with technology! They’re all stuck there…in Square One, with their traditional style of learning - memorising everything and feeling quite happy about it!!!

Oops! “…in their pursuit OF…” not “for”! Sorry!

OMG. That freaked me out. It’s undeniable that the youngsters nowadays don’t really know how to utilize internet the way it should be. All they know is Googling about Akademi Fantasia, MySpace etc, etc. It’s really a waste of technology! To make things worst, our dearest Government used to kinda labelled fellow bloggers as Liars. To be sincere, blogging does give something significant in society. No wonder Pak Lah lost some seats in previous election! Hahaha :)

Well, the video says it all. I’m pretty aware that it is a crisis over here in Malaysia but I’m not sure the ministry could see this clearly or not. Let’s not talk about secondary school students. Even undergraduates from various public universities shown little or no interest in harnessing the powers of the Internet. All they know is to checkout friendster profiles and forward useless messages whenever they online. I see no maturity in their actions. As a matter of fact, the computer literacy among undergraduates is so pathetic that it is rare for portable storage devices of these young people not to be infected by viruses and trojans. Therefore you’ll see funny campaigns such as The Anti-Virus Month etc. If something is to be done, the first thing we really need to do is to increase the awareness of local undergraduates about the the potential of the Internet other that just gossiping around and checking out guys and ladies. LOL…

WoW! This video really made me think about the future.
As you mention, with so much information, the world needs a system to filter out junks and data that have very little value.
I think this will be quite a challenge for the world…

A very thought provoking video indeed, so provoking that my brain was too cramped to reply to your comments. Aikss.. But now I’m perfectly fine.

Suituapui: Orang Utan considered as homo sapiens? They should look at the mirror. It’s time to decide whether is their brain bigger than the orang utans or otherwise. Square One - memorizing facts and never bother to explore further or search for more information.

I was very surprised that nowadays students could buy in their teachers idea. I met two or three students who believe blindly in what their teachers “suggested” them. Their teachers suggested (shared) a few occupations to them, the heck is they go and program everything inside their own mind without even giving it a thought. What’s happening?

Mojaamin: Ironically, KJ and KhirToyo have their own blogs as well. Can we consider them as liars also? If I would want to make a generalization as what our beloved ZamZam did, our Government is a liar as well. Moja, I am glad we blog. Not because we blog to spread rumours or just Akademedi Fantasia, but we blog to disseminate facts and information like this (i.e. shift happens) for the betterment of our society. Keep up the good job!

ColourfulWorld: Would you like to write an article on the above 3 questions which I posted? I believe that would be an interesting post if you could join me to pen down this piece of article.

3Point8: That’s a challenge to face. Even now, information is already overloaded and some even outdated. I wonder how are we (young adults) and our younger generations are to cope with this.

I’m glad to be discussing that topic with you but first I have to clear my remaining posts. =p And by tomorrow if nothing wrong happens I’ll be able to clear everything. =)
