Where have the children been?
I hope you still remember the case Nurul Huda (2004), Halilafati (2004), Nur Suhada (2000), Hung MeiFong (1987), just to name a few who were either kidnapped, missing, brutally murdered or raped. This kind of cases have been bothering concerned Malaysians of late.
According to statistics released by the police, a total of 6270 children and those under 18 were missing within the period of 2004 until May 2008. Somehow 4237 of them managed to return home safely while the remaining 2033 were still missing. (Source: SinChew)
What is being done?
A few months ago SinChew roll out this program called 《提防怪叔叔》 which I literally translated it as “Preventing Perverted Uncle”. I applaud the daily’s move and initiative to organize talks in schools, distributing booklets and creating awareness among children and youths.
Yesterday during Mass, our assistant parish priest, Rev Fr Paul Wong (王保禄神父) distributed hundred copies of the booklet to children and youths. He managed to get the booklet with a low price from the daily and most importantly the church is so supportive of such maiden move.
My story, my encounter
Everyone has their own story to tell. The time is right for me to share with you one of my encounter with such perverts! I remember it happened when I was 13. One night while I was rushing to finish my homework, the phone rang. No one was at home so I climbed up the stairs to reach for the phone.
“Hello”, a man spoke in a deep voice. I thought it was one of my uncle who wanted to talk to my dad or my mum, but it turned out to be a sales person. He started promoting new brand of shampoos to me and asking me what kind of shampoo I use. I guess my voice was rather matured when I was 13 that that perverted fella could not really tell my actual age.
Sick of hearing him bragging about how good his shampoo is, I told him I don’t have cash and am still a minor. Suddenly he started to switch topic. What now? He began saying things like “Oh, it seems like you are in your teen and some major changes is happening with your body. You are experiencing some kind of changes don’t you? Say for example, your voice is growing deep and pubic hairs started to grow…”
Being 13, I was still naive and this kind of sex-education was not made available in our education curriculum and our parents never mentioned to us anything about our physical changes. Our education system and our parents let us grow up and assuming that we know everything about it, as if.
I kept on listening to this fella who described to me the type of changes a boy will go through before becoming a man. Hairs, wider chest, bigger size, sperm, wet dreams and etc were much of the subjects of the conversation. I guess he got so excited that he ventured into another topic, MASTURBATION!
Teens are curious, so was I. I kept on listening. He instructed me to follow his recommended step-by-step instruction on how to masturbate as he was talking over the phone. I did not do as what he said but I just kept on listening. As he is describing to me his ‘tips’ I could hear him stroking something and a few minutes later I heard groans and heavy breaths. I became suspicious with the motive of this man.
Somehow something in my mind told me, “Gosh! Perverted uncle! Slammed the phone!”
Now! You see, boys not only girls may also be the victim of sexual harassment. You have read my encounter with a perverted man, I am glad no harm was done to me physically. I never tell my parents about this incident. And I believe most victims won’t tell their parents either.
Steps to be taken!
Tell your children that their body is to be kept protected from unwanted touching from others (i.e. perverted uncle), especially their sexual organs.
Children nowadays like to chat via online services. Get them to know that it is not appropriate to disclose address, phone numbers, personal photo of themselves and members of the family to strangers. Don’t ever go out for a meeting with strangers.
Perverted uncle likes lure children with kind invitation because they can easily manipulate children’s naiveness and innocence.
Encourage your children not to walk alone or being alone in a secluded place. They are so little to fight against those perverted uncles. Fetch your children if you can.
Even those who are close to your children may turn out to be a perverted uncle what more to say strangers. Teach your children to be aware when someone is behaving impolite to them.
Now, not only girls are victims, boys too! Time has changed my friend. Teach your son as well to protect himself.
Be extra careful when you are walking alone or sitting in a bus/train for you may not know who will approach you and touch you in an impolite way. If you received a harassment phone call, hang up the phone. If you saw someone portraying their private parts in front of you, don’t shout, run to a more crowded place. The more you shout the more those perverted uncles will get excited!

A pedophile?!!! Those are sick bastards, preying on children. In the US these people will be social outcasts and beaten up. I’m kinda surprised of the lack of hatred towards these vile creatures.
elvawenn: Pedophile seems to be a more appropriate term but I wonder why this term is not normally used in Malaysian’s newspaper. In Chinese dailies, they call such person “guai shu shu”.
I came to know about the term when I watched Prison Break. You know that T-bag? I wanted to beat him up so badly every time I see him.
Great post, daniel!! *thumbs up*
I encountered a pervert on my last day of sitting for my SPM paper, physics to be exact since that was the only paper where I was the first to leave the exam room (no, not a genius, more like couldn’t answer most of the questions hehe). As I waited to be picked up at the bus stop outside the school gate, a lorry stopped about 10m from the bus stop and a man came out. He left the door as he stood up near the lorry. He was trying to get my attention and I ignored him. A quick glance at him and I saw him stroking himself!!
“OMG! A Pervert!” That was what crossed my mind, I kept my cool even though I was trembling inside .. praying that my aunt would come soon! Luckily she did…
p.s: What the pervert didn’t know was that I couldn’t see clearly without my specs haha .. my eyes was tired so I took off my glasses …. so yeah, I didn’t see a thing - only his blurry hand on the level of his crotch .. haha
Whoops, correction!
*left the door opened
