Sarawak damned with damns

Behold Sarawakians, your lovely State is planning to build more and more dams. Damned! The beautiful name Land of Hornbills may as well be replaced with the name Land of Dams!!

In the name of development, particularly aluminium-smelting industry, the clever State government is considering and planning to build more damns! The more damns they built, more soils will be destroyed, lush green forests which is supposed to be the LUNG for Sarawak will be cut, the natives being driven out from their homeland, and most of all someone’s pocket is getting bigger.

Sarawak to build 12 dams to meet future power needs

PETALING JAYA: Sarawak plans to build 12 hydroelectric dams to meet its future industrialisation needs.

On another note, the one and only English daily in East Malaysia reported this:

Fighting poverty outside SCORE

MIRI: The state government is to carry out poverty eradication projects outside the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) by way of five agropolitan projects which are to be spread out evenly across the state, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu said.

To know what the term agropolitan means, just click here. In lay men’s term, agropolitan project consists of various integrated agricultural and agro-based development projects.

I have plans to return to my State to serve after graduating. It looks like good news to us (civil engineers) as far as development is concern. But the underlying question is, do all these so-called projects for the rakyat really benefit the rakyat or only a certain quarter of high-rank officials? Who knows? In the mean time, let’s just wait and see before jumping into conclusion.

So far got one lah! Batang Ai…and is still doing ok. All this talk about so many dams! Don’t worry, if you’re worried! They’re takingso long to build Bakun that I really wonder if I’ll get to see it in my lifetime!!!…And now they want to talk about building somemore. I used to teach in Geography that dams have a lot of advantages (despite having to resettle people - leading to all kinds of social problems and drown vast areas of natural rainforest)…but can be worrying, like those in earthquake prone China!!!

sarawak build more just because they can and they’re rich… ha ha, stp… no worries… no earthquake thing here.. plus… they uses the safest way to build those dams… and also the most expensive…

keeyit,
Bakun is still under construction. The Bakun dam is able to generate 2400MW of electricity, and it was reported that this dam is going to provide electricity to Peninsula. The economic crisis in 1997 has slowed down the process, until now we’re still not sure when it will be completed.

cibol,
Sarawak is rich! Too rich! I wonder does the aluminium smeltering industry require such huge amount of electricity. Any electrical engineers to clear our doubts?

suituapui,
Bakun oh Bakun, almost ten years if not mistaken. Don’t worry, in Geography we learned that the island of Borneo is not located in the volcano ring.

clement,
Hi and welcome. Are you involved in dam construction? Dams must be built in a safe and precise manner which in the end we hire overseas consultants and experts. This explains why it’s expensive. =)

cbenc12,
Let’s just keep this to ourselves. We’ll wait and see. Wait and see is the only thing we rakyat can do.
