Lunch at Little Italy

On one fine day in Kota Kinabalu, I bought my sister to Little Italy for lunch. It was my generous treat for her in conjunction with her graduation. This restaurant is touted as one of the best Italian restaurant in town, serving pasta, pizza and Italian cuisine.

Located on the ground floor of Capital Hotel, Little Italy is a stone throw from Wisma Merdeka and Wisma Sabah, both are popular shopping centres and offices. We did some window shopping before settling down at this restaurant.

We ordered four dishes. A plate of salad, cheesy ravioli, salmon pizza, and ham sandwich were all we need to fill up our stomach. The meal costs me about one hundred and twenty bucks but the smile on my sister’s face is worth more than any gold I can find in the world.

Ravioli Combo. We had ravioli spinach and ravioli mushroom served with two different cheese cream - quattro formmagi and panna e fanghi. Sealed between two layers of thin pasta dough are spinach and mushroom, so far it's the best that I've tried.

Ravioli Combo

Mediterranean Salad. Next on our dining table was this healthy bowl of salad. An excellent side dish to any dishes for lunch.

Mediterranean Salad

Pizza Salmone. Smoked salmon served with a thin pizza crust topped with onion rings.

Pizza Salmone

Puccia Prosciuto. In Italian, puccia is bread while prosciuto is ham. Sandwiched between the puccia is prosciuto with slices of green vegetables and cheese.

I would say it is excellent food and value for money. Given the opportunity to pay Sabah a visit again, I must drop by this restaurant.

Are you hungry now? Thank God it's Friday, my lunch break is two and a half hour long.

Kota Kinabalu – Local Food

I have shown you the streets of Kota Kinabalu, having stirred your hormones with the picturesque of the city itself now I am going to let you drop your mouth and arouse your taste buds.

If you think you might be offended by pork, please skip this post. If you like pork, by all means let your taste buds do the reading. Thank you.

Authentic Tuaran Noodle, Tuaran
(Opposite Shell Tuaran)

Tuaran Mee, Tuaran

Tuaran, a small and tranquil town north of Kota Kinabalu (40 minutes drive) has one of the finest noodles I’ve ever tried. Bearing the big signboard “Tuaran Mee” the shop is located at the newer part of the town and it stands out among the historical shoplots.

Tuaran mee as it is known is a well-known hawker dish of Sabah. Fried to golden crust with batter of egg yolk and flour, it gives the aroma of egg when consumed hot. Slices of Chinese sweetened roast pork (charseow) and fried egg rolls are use as garnishes to add delight to the eating sensation.

(Mui Hong Restoran, Jalan Berjaya, Tamparuli)

Tuaran Mee, Tamparuli

Besides Tuaran, Tamparuli which is located 15 minutes southeast of Tuaran is another popular stopover town. This is the first Tuaran noodle I had during one of the stopovers while embarking on a journey to Kundasang.

Tuaran Mee

Being a happy chap, I grew in love with this noodle not until I found the authentic Tuaran mee which I mentioned above. Take my advice, always go for the most original and authentic noodle even if it means travelling extra mile. In any case, if you are heading to Kundasang then just pullover at Tamparuli, if you are heading to Kudat then Tuaran will be in your way.

Pork Noodles @ Kota Kinabalu
(Kedai Kopi Melanian, Lorong Pintas Plaza 1, KK)

Pork Noodles, Kedai Kopi Melanian

Let’s not venture very far and come back to Kota Kinabalu. I am quite surprised that they are countless shops serving pork noodles. Elsewhere across Malaysia, it is understood that noodle cook in soup is know as 水面 (Shui Mian). In Sabah, it is a different story, if you want to have noodle in soup you have to tell them you want 煮面 (Zhu Mian).

Pork noodle with soup and tofu

I personally don’t quite like the noodle which has a thick smell and taste of soya sauce; in fact I dislike soya sauce because it is black. The meatball/pork/wanton soup, however, is nice and is very much to my liking. I ordered a piece of yong tau fu (stuffed tofu); to my revelation it is a piece of square tofu stuffed with minced meat which is very different from the “conventional” ones.

Puding Kelapa & Lokan @ Kota Kinabalu
(Jalan Sulaman, KK)

Puding kelapa at Jalan Sulaman

Fronting the sea, Kota Kinabalu can be very hot during the day. Nothing beats a refreshing puding kelapa (coconut pudding) to keep the body temperate a few decimals degree cooler. If I am not mistaken, this roadside stall is all the way up of Politeknik Kota Kinabalu. Ask the locals, they will be more than willing to tell you how to get there.

Puding kelapa

Concealed in this coconut is no ordinary coconut water but something revitalizing cool. Eat the pudding (jelly) together with the coconut water, they blend well together and is velvety smooth to the throat.

Kelapa bakar

If you are up for some hot drink, try the kelapa bakar (baked coconut) instead. The whole coconut is baked in the fires of charcoal before being peeled for serving. This is not something I would recommend for a hot weather; you can get steaming hot and sweaty.

Lokan bakar

Lokan panggang (baked lokan) is a side dish served in this road side. At its simplest, this baked mussel is a good choice for an evening snack.

Sin Kee Bah Kut Teh @ Kota Kinabalu
(Kedai Kopi Kwang Tung Chai Kolombong, Jalan Pantai, KK)

Sin Kee Bak Kut Teh

A bowl of bak kut teh adds delight to my stay in Kota Kinabalu. For direction Sin Kee Bah Kut Teh is located beside Ang’s Hotel and facing the OCBC bank. Driving passed this place several times, almost all of the tables are always taken up.

Bak kut teh

The name bak kut teh plainly translates ‘pork bone tea’. This bowl of complex broth of herbs and spices contains meaty pork ribs and offal.

That’s all for the food my family and I had. We were treated a seafood dinner by my friend’s parents, but being a polite guest I chose not to take out my camera to do the usual snapping. My perception is that table manners should always come first; I found it really discourteous to let the host waits while one spend his own sweet time snapping pictures.

The next time you visit Kota Kinabalu, do try out the local food that I’ve talked about.

Dinner at Italiannies

Italiannies

Everyone loves good food. Everyone likes the kick of hanging out at the restaurant once in a while. That being said, being no exception, I love food too, especially those served in a rather cosy and elegant interior.

It was Zuddin’s birthday, my next room neighbour, so we decided to eat out. His birthday falls on 8th while mine 10th of September. That night, between Tony Roma’s and Italiannies, it was a hard choice to make. Mid Valley Gardens is good in picking tenants.

Because of the month of Ramadhan Tony Roma’s was full so we made it to Italiannies. It’s my first time here. At Italiannies, it is said that “So Good So Much. So Share!”

Italiannies Lamb Shank was Zuddin’s choice while I opted for Italiannies Roasted Chicken for a change. Drool flooded our mouths when the food was served.

Italiannies lamb shank

The lamb shank looks wonderful. It is tender and easy to chew with. Once it’s in your mouth it melts easily, I know I am exaggerating but it does.

Italiannies grilled chicken

I’ve always love Nando’s Peri Peri but Italiannies beat them. The spices and dried chillies perfected the taste. The tenderness of the meat is wonderful, the chicken must be virgin, and it has to be.

Since it was a birthday treat, there have to be something special. I asked the waitress if Italiannies has any surprise for birthday boy. It turned out that they gave him a bread pudding and the crew actually sung him a birthday song.

Impressed I am. This makes Italiannies lives up to the name “So Good So Much. So Share!”

Aizuddin

If you are wondering about the price, it's well priced about 100 bucks for a lamb shank, a roasted chicken and two shakes. The bread pudding is free.

Even when I am writing this there's another birthday celebration waiting for me at the Gardens. Thank you mates! I'm coming, I'm coming!
