Slipping through my fingers

Speaking of Kuching, I must say that the Kuching-ness (if there is even this term) in me is slipping through my fingers day by day. Seriously I need more dose of Kuching-ness in me. For goodness sake, I am going back to Kuching this coming weekend to fill myself with jabs of these doses.

One of my colleauge who is working in Kalaka-Saribas gave me a surprise call when he was in the city centre yesterday. He asked for direction to Taman Kereta from The Spring. My mind kinda like went blank for a few seconds. I was asking myself "Where on earth is Taman Kereta? I know The Spring is the most happening place in town but I can't locate its position?"

Proof #1: I can't even recall the landmarks around Taman Kereta except that there is one bank, one hotel and the famous cat statues.

Proof #2: Only after several minutes of brain digging I managed to come out with the ROUGH direction. During which I recommended some food to try while doing the brain digging.

The two proofs above clearly show that my grasp of Kuching and the very fond childhood memory is ceding. Seven years in the academic town of Skudai and now working in Kuala Lumpur really rob the Kuching-ness  away. But there is something that no one can take away from us Sarawakians - our warmth, our charm, our statehood, and our culture though diverse but cherished. I always have the feeling of being so connected with Sarawakians and the next of kin - Sabahans. Perhaps we are isolated in an island called Borneo. If you watch the movie Australia, perhaps it's the charm of the people there.

I have something to say about Kalaka-Saribas. This place is truly mystical! Located at the Sri Aman Division, Batang Lupar flows through this Kalaka-Saribas region. Many of you know not of this famous Batang Lupar. Surveys show that the population of crocodile in this river is 0.90 individuals/km. (Source: Sarawak Forestry) Know as "Bujang Senang" these crocs do prey on human being. Now that should scare you off!

We Sarawakians refer to bigger rivers as Batang and the smaller ones are called Sungai. We definitely like big things because we are the biggest state. The beautiful land of Sarawak has the largest river in Malaysia. We even have giant caves.  We have the great hornbills. We have the most beautiful sunset.

Look at the picture! I feel home already! Can you smell that?

Yeah, it's the smell of RM177 for a MAS ticket and 2 days of recorded leave.

So guys, you won't find me in KL for a few days because I will be stuffing myself with love from my parents and food and fresh air (if there's no haze).

Eating the right thing for supper

The feeling of being away from home for five months is like five long dragging years. Yet, a packet of Sarawak's very own delicacy - Kolo Mee quenched my desire to go back home. Though it is momentarily but I am happy enough.

The texture of the mee...

The char siew and minced pork...

Chillies as topping and flavouring...

The final product... Kolo Mee!

This is the "tabao" version of Kolo Mee, so please bear with the simplicity. Nothing is better than food from home. Many thanks to my housemate, Victor, who brought this Kolo Mee all the way from Kuching. Wishing him all the best for his technical paper presentation tomorrow!

New start

It has to be your day today because it has been a week since I last blog. Hmmm... I am beginning to enjoy the feeling of being captured by the flash light of the camera lately. I thought of sharing with you one photo taken at my Grandmother's 81st birthday anniversary which was held successfully last Sunday. It was certainly a great day for all of us (children and grandchildren). The lady beside me is my sister who is now doing her Bachelor in Banking and Finance in Sabah.

Alright, I am happily enjoying my holiday in my hometown Kuching. One week has passed and I am doing fine. Let me tell you what I missed most: I miss my buddies who are in Skudai and of course my broadband connection. I think I am a weird person, when I am studying in Skudai I missed my family badly but now that I am with my family I missed my friends back there. What's wrong with me... :)

What's up with today? I am actually observing my fasting and abstinence today in conjunction with Ash Wednesday. Tomorrow marks the start of the Lent season, a period of 40 days for penance and reflection. Too bad Chinese New Year get into the way, nonetheless I should refrain myself from indulging myself with those tasty food and delicacies this new year. I will still eat but not to the point of eating excessively like I used to when I was a kid/teenager. Haha!

Oh ya. Refrigerator! My parents bought a new Hitachi refrigerator with a capacity of 700liters. It's silver in colour and it's huge! Our old refrigerator has reached the end of its life after serving us for 17 years. Our new Hitachi refrigerator now stands proudly in our kitchen.

This very new year, I want to start anew. I want to put my 200% effort in whatever things I do, especially in my research and writing, my involvement in my local parish, workout for a fit body, and treating relationship with my friends and family with a more loving heart.

I am looking forward for the family reunion tomorrow. It would be good to gather with my relatives again. Gong Xi Fa Cai!
